The FIFA World Cup 2026 features Lionel Messi’s Argentina against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the quarterfinal.

Argentina will start their championship defence against Algeria, which they discovered at Friday’s 2026 World Cup draw in Washington, DC. Lionel Messi, who would turn 39 during the competition next summer, will face Algeria, Austria, and Jordan in Group J if he decides to participate in his sixth World Cup with Argentina.

The competition, which will take place in Mexico, the United States, and Canada from June 11 to July 19, 2026, will be the 40-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo’s last opportunity to win the World Cup before his career ends.

Similar to Messi, Ronaldo has already participated in five World Cups and is the all-time men’s international scorer with 143 goals. Ronaldo’s Portugal is in Group K with Colombia, the country of his former Real Madrid colleague James Rodriguez, Uzbekistan, and the Winner of the Play-Off Tournament 1 (DR Congo, Jamaica, or New Caledonia).
