India defeated England by six wickets in a one-day international at Edgbaston on Tuesday, ending a protracted winless streak.
Despite a comeback from 107-6 to 258 all out, England was unable to hold the total. With 28 balls left, India reached 262-4 thanks to their excellent run chase speed.
The triumph brings India’s miserable tour back to life. The Twenty20 global champion lost its top T20 position after being blanked in that format by England 4-0 and Ireland 2-0 in Belfast.
However, at the beginning of a three-match ODI series, reinforcements including skipper Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Lokesh Rahul—many of whom hadn’t played in weeks—proved to be too good for England.

Within the first nine overs, openers Sharma and Kohli were easily removed. With a half-century off 51 balls, including 30 from boundaries, Gill restored confidence. India took three wickets in 15 deliveries after he was injured and departed. Rahul played on to Josh Tongue after Harry Brook ran out Shreyas Iyer on 35.
However, all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar regained the lead with persistent singles that undermined England’s chances.
On 28, Sundar managed to survive when the ball struck the stumps after bouncing off his pad and shoe without knocking off a bail. With an undefeated partnership of 102 off a slow 105 balls, he and the more assertive Patel easily won.
