The three-time champions United were making their return to Europe’s premier club tournament after a three-season absence and quickly established a three-goal advantage by halftime in Thursday’s encounter, thanks to goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, and Benjamin Sesko.
United’s captain Fernandes, who is a contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or award, scored the second goal following a passing sequence that demonstrated the increasing confidence of the home team.
Sesko was played through for the third goal just before halftime, and the Slovakian forward skillfully rounded the goalkeeper—resisting the urge to go down for a penalty—before finishing from a narrow angle.
Cunha nearly added his second and United’s fourth goal in the 60th minute, but his curled shot from the edge of the area was too close to the goalkeeper. Fernandes attempted a similar shot just seconds later but was unsuccessful.
