Villa’s perfect start rolls on with a Viking victory.
Aston Villa made it three wins from three in the 2026–27 Champions League league phase, beating Viking 3–1 at Villa Park. Unai Emery’s side were in control for long stretches, moving to nine points and second place in the table after Matchday Three. Only Paris Saint-Germain sit above them, also on nine points.
Villa’s pressure paid off in the 23rd minute. Ibrahim Mbaye swung in a corner, and Ross Barkley darted to the near post to turn it home. The hosts kept pushing, and eight minutes before half-time Alysson won a penalty after being tripped by Zlatko Tripic. The referee checked the incident on VAR, and Emiliano Buendía calmly converted to make it 2–0.

Viking had shown in the previous round, when they drew 3–3 with Bayern Munich, that they could be dangerous. They started the second half with more intent, but Villa struck again on 62 minutes: Alysson’s cross caused trouble and Henrik Heggheim turned the ball into his own net. Peter Christiansen scored a late consolation for the visitors, with the goal awarded after a VAR review, but Villa’s win was never seriously in doubt.

Champions League snapshot after three matches
- Paris Saint-Germain — 9 points
- Aston Villa — 9 points
- Liverpool — 9 points
- Real Madrid — 9 points
- Real Betis — 9 points
- VfB Stuttgart — 7 points
Villa’s place near the top matters in a 36-team league phase where every club plays eight different opponents. The top eight qualify directly for the last 16; teams finishing ninth to 24th go into a two-legged play-off, while the bottom 12 are eliminated from Europe. Three wins have given Villa an excellent platform, but there is still a long way to go.
Alysson was influential throughout, earning the penalty and setting up the own goal, while Barkley and Buendía supplied the finishing touch in the first half. Villa have now won 12 straight European home matches. Emery’s side are not just making up the numbers: this confident start has put them firmly among the early pace-setters.
