BLACKCAPS v India: Christchurch kicks off a series building towards a record crowd

The countdown is nearly over. New Zealand and India open their five-match T20I series at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, 22 October, with the second game at the same venue two days later. The tour then moves to Wellington, Auckland and Hamilton, finishing at Seddon Park on 1 November. One series, four cities and plenty of cricket packed into 11 days.

Auckland is shaping up as a major stop. The 30 October match at Eden Park is tracking towards a record attendance, adding another headline to an already highly anticipated tour. The appetite for tickets is clear: New Zealand Cricket reported that more than 76,000 had been snapped up across the series about a month before the opening match. That is strong early support for a summer showdown between two of the game’s biggest cricket nations.

There are some eye-catching numbers behind the hype, too. Finn Allen smashed an unbeaten century from just 33 balls in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup semi-final, while Tim Seifert added 58 from 33 in the same chase. Seifert also arrives after a prolific Hundred campaign, where he scored 394 runs at a strike rate of 168. The pair’s aggressive starts could be a key feature of the series.

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has a deep pace group at his disposal, including Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy and the returning Adam Milne. Rachin Ravindra is out of the T20I series with a shoulder injury, so the hosts will need other players to fill his all-round role. India, led by Shreyas Iyer, will be looking to spoil the homecoming and start the tour with a win.

Live coverage: In New Zealand, Sky is the host broadcaster for the home internationals, with free-to-air audio on Sport Nation and live scoring through NZC. Fans in India can watch on Sony Sports Network or stream on SonyLIV. Check local listings for broadcast times and channel details.

With the opening match just around the corner and Eden Park’s crowd tracking towards a milestone, the stage is set for a lively series. Follow the live score, keep an eye on the big hitters and see whether the BLACKCAPS can make home advantage count.
