Neymar has announced his retirement from international football after Brazil’s shock World Cup last-16 defeat to Norway.
After playing in his last international game, Neymar started crying on the field at MetLife Stadium.
In Sunday’s 2-1 Round of 16 loss to Norway, the Brazilian sensation entered the game as a second-half substitute. The 34-year-old reduced Norway’s advantage with a penalty kick in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late. Neymar then declared his retirement from international football.

“I made an effort. I completed it here at MetLife Stadium, where it all began. “It’s over now,” Neymar declared.
Neymar participated in four World Cup competitions after making his senior international debut in 2010. In addition, he participated in two Olympic competitions, where he led Brazil to a gold medal in 2016 and won a silver medal in 2012.
At the 2026 World Cup, the Brazilian forward appeared twice, both as a substitute. Before scoring his only goal of the competition from the penalty spot in stoppage time against Norway, he had a brief appearance in the second half of the group stage match against Scotland.
Thierry Henry congratulated Neymar shortly after the announcement and wanted to concentrate his remarks on his career as a whole.
Norway moves on to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the round of 16 match between Mexico and England at Miami Stadium on July 11.
