“It’s been my last World Cup, yes,” Ronaldo told reporters following Portugal’s 1-0 loss to Spain in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday. Ronaldo stated that he will take his time deciding his future with his country. “But now I will have time to think, stay with my family, and life continues.”
After playing the entire ninety minutes of the match, Ronaldo broke down in tears. He departed the field to a thunderous applause from the Arlington, Texas, crowd following the final whistle.

Many questioned whether Ronaldo was the ideal choice to be Portugal’s main striker going into the tournament, making him a bit of a lightning rod. Out of five games, he only scored twice: once against Uzbekistan and once on a penalty kick against Croatia in the round of 32. Ronaldo scored his first goal in a World Cup knockout round encounter against Croatia.
After the match, Clint Dempsey said of Ronaldo, “I think Cristiano walks out of this tournament with his chest held high. He scored three goals.” He made every effort to support his team. It’s been enjoyable to see him play, as I mentioned.
