Liverpool has won the League Cup for the first time in a decade after defeating Chelsea 11-10 on penalties.
On Sunday, the two heavyweights couldn’t be separated in an exhilarating match full of free-flowing attacking play and chances, with four goals disallowed for offside. The final was won when Chelsea’s substitute goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga blasted his effort over the crossbar after 21 successful penalties.

Liverpool’s victory was their first domestic Cup victory under German manager Jurgen Klopp. Caoimhin Kelleher, a Liverpool understudy, won the battle of the second-choice goalkeepers against Arrizabalaga in the end.

Unlike Chelsea, Liverpool allowed Kelleher, who is 23 years old, to preserve his place as goalkeeper in cup competitions rather than using first-choice Alisson Becker in the final.
“There should be room for sentiment in professional football,” Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp stated.
“He’s a little guy, we ask him to do a lot, he starts competing, and then we come to the final, and I tell him he can’t play?”

Liverpool last won a domestic cup final in 2012, when Kenny Dalglish was in charge. Under Klopp, Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020.
The game began with a pre-match display of support for the people of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, with applause ringing throughout Wembley as the blue and yellow of Ukraine flashed across stadium screens.
