The Young Talent of the Indian Cricket Team – Tilak Varma

Tilak Varma: Another gem from MI's scouting table

Tilak Varma is a left-handed batter and a right-arm off-break bowler for MI in his first franchise.

The advantages of a 10-team IPL are well known: not only does it spread talent across the board, but it also gives many more players, particularly newbies, a chance to shine. It’s one thing to take advantage of that chance. What has made some of the young bats stand out in IPL is their ability to do so in an enthralling manner by playing nerveless innings that enervate the opposition.

Brevis and Tilak are the youngest players in the IPL thus far, having made their debut at the age of 18 years and 350 days. Brevis was selected in the auction in February by Mumbai, who were delighted by his batting technique and fearlessness during the Under-19 World Cup.

Picked in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, he didn’t exactly shine in the competition, but his subsequent domestic heroics drew the attention of a few organizations, who battled it out at the 2022 IPL auctions.

Tilak has been tasked with filling the shoes of Ishan Kishan in the much-vaunted middle order and is the latest promise tale from Mumbai Indians’ highly successful scouting operation. With Kishan’s ascension to the top of the order and Suryakumar Yadav’s absence due to injury, he has shown artistry of both – Kishan’s daring and Surya’s craftiness in shot-making, strong yet easy to the eye – in the first two games.

At 19, he has already become the youngest MI player to score an IPL half-century. But there is more value in him that is being explored by the franchise. Work is on behind the scenes on his bowling.

“We had a lot of financial issues as a family growing up.” My father had to cover my cricket fees as well as my elder brother’s schooling on his meager salary. I could just about cover my cricketing expenses in the last few years thanks to some sponsorship and match payments.

“At the moment, we don’t have a home. So, with whatever money I get from the IPL, my sole goal is to buy a house for my parents. This IPL money allows me to play whenever I want for the remainder of my career.”
