Defending champions Chennaiyin FC would look to return to winning ways when they take on an upbeat Kerala Blasters in their Indian Super League football match at home in Chennai on Saturday. Chennaiyin had jumped up the ladder with victory over NorthEast United FC but the draw against Pune in their last match slowed them down. Chennaiyin FC (CFC) would believe they missed a golden opportunity to go top of the table, after squandering a 1-0 lead against FC Pune City away in their last game whereas Kerala are riding high after scoring a come-from-behind win against FC Goa in Goa on October 24. They were down by a goal in the first session but staged a marvelous recovery in the second half to floor FC Goa 2-1 and jump to the fifth spot with eight points from six matches.
Materazzi did not offer any hints on the team he would use for the Southern derby but if he chooses to field marquee player John Arne Riise, the Liverpool legend will be up against a familiar English Premier League rival. At the other end of the field will be Kerala Blasters marquee Aaron Hughes, the former Fulham defender (2007-08) who played against Riise (then Liverpool FC) in the English Premier League.
In the start of first half, Both teams haven’t really hit the ground running. Kerala Blasters have been more up front than Chennaiyin but the home team are looking confident in defence. where in 15 min,Raphael tried to get to a poor pass before one of his opponents and ends up crashing into the Kerala player instead. He seemed to hurt his ankle but is carrying on.
Chennaiyin FC 0-0 Kerala Blasters
A slow start in first 25 minutes were lit up in the 24th minute when Chennaiyin had two very good chances to go in front after a poorly defended corner kick. Aaron Hughes was the man who came to Kerala’s rescue. Bernard Mendy then fooled a few Kerala defenders with some lovely footwork and let one rip but it only found the side netting.
A very good shot from Rafique when he sends a great cross from the right wing to his opposite number. Josu collects the ball on the left wing, and connects with the bouncing ball to smash a volley over the bar from a narrow angle. Great effort from yellow titans.
Hanz Mulder gets replaced in 34th minute due to injury. That is something that can change a lot of things in midfield for the defending champions.
HALF TIME: Chennaiyin FC 0-0 Kerala Blasters
The first half has dragged along with nothing worth mention. Hanz Mulder walked off the field seemingly injured and that will be a source of worry for Materazzi. Except for a moment when Chennaiyin came close to scoring thrice, this has been a half in which chances have been at a premium.
In the start of 2nd half; Belfort plays the ball out to Josu on the left wing and makes his way in to the box, where he gets his head on the end of the Spaniard’s cross but his header glances narrowly wide of the far post. Best chance of the night for Kerala so.
Michael Chopra comes off to be replaced by Kadio. An unfit player for a very, very fit one. Good substitution from Coppell.
In the 78min of the game,A good play from Jerry! He plays an intelligent ball forward to Peluzo on the left wing, and the Italian works his way into the box and tumbles after being tackled by a sliding Jhingan. Jerry keeps the ball alive and swings in a cross, but it goes out of play.
Karanjit keeps Chennai in the game! Kadio threads a brilliant through ball to Belfort on the left edge of the box, and he shoots early when 1-on-1 with the keeper, but Karanjit makes the save and concedes a corner. A very good safe from karanjit.
The result leaves Chennaiyin FC and Kerala Blasters in the same place where they started, as they are on 4th and 5th place with 9 points each.
