FIFA announces host cities for the North America 2026 World Cup

FIFA has selected 16 cities across the US, Mexico, and Canada to host the 2026 World Cup, including New York, Toronto and Mexico City

The 2026 World Cup will be held in Vancouver and Toronto, but Edmontonians will be left out when Canada, the United States, and Mexico co-host the tournament.

Vancouver and Toronto, as well as the American cities of Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, and New York/New Jersey, will host games in the expanded 48-team tournament, FIFA announced Thursday. In Mexico, the matches will be held in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.

Edmonton had to host at least five games, more than the bid book required when the Alberta government announced $110 million in backing for the bid earlier this year.

“We informed FIFA that if there were any worries about the city’s commitment or the province’s circumstances, we’d work with FIFA to find a way to provide flexibility,” Sohi added.
“Alberta’s government put in a lot of effort and invested a lot of money to assist the bid to succeed. Countless world-class sporting events have taken place in our province. Commonwealth Stadium is Western Canada’s largest venue and would be a fantastic host.”

Canada and Mexico are slated to host ten games apiece, with the other 60 games being held in cities around the United States. The cost of the renovations has not been calculated, Mark said, but B.C. is expecting to spend between $240 million and $260 million on hosting the tournament.

At a neighborhood bar, Toronto Mayor John Tory watched the announcement and applauded with the rest of the crowd as his city was named a World Cup host. It’ll be wonderful for the game, it’ll be great for the city, it’ll be great for the economy, it’ll be amazing for the city spirit,” he said. “This city is the world in one location, so whatever teams come to play here, you know there’ll be a people ready to cheer them on and go crazy with excitement.”
