Why isn’t Zlatan Ibrahimovic a part of Sweden’s Euro 2020 squad?

Due to injuries, Zlatan Ibrahimovic will not be able to represent Sweden at Euro 2020. After standing down during Euro 2016, the veteran striker was due to return to international duty this summer.

After a dismal performance in France five years ago, Ibrahimovic chose to retire from the national squad. Despite the team’s success without Ibrahimovic, Janne Andersson, the manager of AC Milan, indicated that the Swedish forward will return for Euro 2020. In March, Ibrahimovic helped Sweden to two victories in World Cup qualifiers against Georgio and Kosovo.

Unfortunately, a knee injury suffered in May ended his prospects of competing in this summer’s tournament, as he was formally ruled out only days before Sweden’s 26-man roster was released.

He got involved in a scuffle for the ball before collapsing with a non-contact injury and having to be removed off the field and replaced by Ante Rebic. As a result, Ibrahimovic has been ruled out for the rest of the season, although he hopes to return to health before the club’s 2021-22 season.

Sweden has been assigned to Group E at Euro 2020, and their campaign will begin on June 14 in Seville against Spain. They will next face Slovakia in Saint Petersburg four days later before closing the group round against Poland on June 23 at the same location.

In Ibrahimovic’s absence, Sweden will hope that Alexander Isak can step up, and the team has more attacking alternatives than it had three years ago at the World Cup. Isak, who is 21 years old, scored 17 goals in 34 La Liga games for Real Sociedad in 2020/21, his greatest season to date.
