Fernando Alonso become the Honorary Club Member of Real Madrid

Spanish F1 driver Fernando Alonso was named honorary club member of Real Madrid on Monday and joined other great Spanish sportsmen like Rafael Nadal and Sergio Garcia as a member of the club.

Alonso and his McLaren team had a disappointingly poor performance at the Italian Grand Prix on Sunday and McLaren’s unhappy partnership with Honda appeared to be heading for divorce after an Italian Grand Prix of hefty grid penalties, poor performance and no points for the former champions.

Alonso and Belgian rookie Stoffel Vandoorne both retired on a day that the team themselves described as ‘gut-wrenchingly disappointing’.

Alonso had collected a 35-place grid penalty after power unit changes, while Vandoorne had a 25-place penalty.

Fernando Alonso said, “I have been asked many times why I am a Real Madrid supporter and I have never known how to answer that. I don’t have a clear answer. I am a Real supporter because I am Real supporter.

“I also don’t know why I have brown eyes or why my resting heart rate this morning was 55, 60. I am a Real supporter because in some ways, like one is chosen by good friends to be a friend, Real Madrid has chosen me like it has chosen many of those here, like millions of people who are Real Madrid supporters and enthusiasts of this great club around the world.”
