
Cavaliers’ Evan Mobley named 2024-25 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
Evan Mobley, forward-centre for the Cleveland Cavaliers, has earned the Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy as the 2024-25 Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Mobley, a four-year NBA veteran, has been selected as the Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year for the first time. The 7-footer is the Cavaliers’ first player to get this honour.

Mobley became the seventh 23-year-old to be named the Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year, following Alvin Robertson (1985-86), Dwight Howard (2008-09), Kawhi Leonard (2014-15), and Jaren Jackson Jr. (2022-23). The award, which has been given out yearly since the 1982-83 season, has never gone to a player younger than 23.

He finished sixth in the NBA in blocked shots per game (1.59) and 13th in defensive rebounds per game (7.0) during the 2024-25 season. He averaged 10.4 shots per game, ranking third among players who appeared in at least 70% of their team’s games (58 of 82).
Mobley received the Kia NBA Eastern Conference Defensive Player of the Month award twice, in December and February. He was also selected as an NBA All-Star for the first time.
Mobley averaged 18.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per 30.5 minutes in 71 games. He led the Cavaliers (64-18) finish with the second-best record in franchise history and secure the Eastern Conference’s top postseason spot.
