The end of the Gallagher Premiership is fast approaching and the final is now only a few short weeks away. After 26 weeks of exceptional English rugby, the winner of the 2021/22 Premiership Rugby season will be crowned on 18 June 2022.

With the last games nearly here, it seems like a good time to take a look back at some of the highlights of this year’s rugby season. From the most thrilling matches to the top point scorers, here’s a recap of the 2021/22 Premiership Rugby—as well as the front runners to win this season’s trophy.

Thirteen Teams for the 2021/22 Season

The 2021/22 Premiership Rugby season began with the opening match on 17 September 2021. This year’s competition has seen two changes: the number of teams and the number of rounds. For the first time since the 1992/93 season, 13 teams have taken part in the competition. To accommodate the 13 teams, the Premiership has taken place across 26 rounds, with 12 teams playing every week.

The Top Try Scorers 

We’ve seen some impressive tries during the 2021/21 Premiership Rugby season with Saracens’ Max Malins and Newcastle Falcons’ George McGuigan topping the leader board. As of 24 May 2022, both players have scored an impressive 15 tries. While sitting in joint third, Agustin Creevy has scored 14 tries for London Irish, as has the Harlequins’ Cadan Murley.

The Defending Champions

After last year’s sensational win, the Harlequins have been skilfully defending their title. At the time of writing on 24 May 2022, the Harlequins have played 23 rounds, winning 15 and losing 8. This includes their stunning eight-try, 52-24 victory against Bristol in round 4, as well as their 41-27 win over Northampton, with Alex Dombrandt scoring a hat-trick in round 12.

However, as it currently stands, it’s the Leicester Tigers leading the way to victory, having played 23 matches and won 19 games. The Saracens are in second, winning 17 of their 23 games so far, with the Harlequins sitting in third.

Predicting the 2021/22 Winner

According to Betfair, the Harlequins have some tough competition. As of 24 May 2022, the Saracens are the bookmaker’s current favorites with even odds. The Harlequins currently sit in third, with odds of 9/2.

  • Leicester Tigers: 15/8
  • Harlequins: 9/2
  • Northampton Saints: 13/1
  • Gloucester: 20/1
  • Sale Sharks: 275/1
