Canada has won 16 medals thus far, all of them have been won by women. Squad Canada’s rowing team won gold in the Women’s Eight race, earning the latest Olympic medal.

Team Canada is made up of 317 athletes, with 60 percent of them being female or identifying as such. However, just 37% of Team Canada was made up of women in 1984; currently, more than ever, Team Canada is headed by women.

Team Canada celebrated the women’s rowing team’s gold medal in the Women’s Eight race on July 30. Penny Oleksiak, a swimmer, has won two medals in the pool — a bronze in the 200-meter freestyle event and a silver in the women’s 4×100-meter relay – establishing history.

Jessica Klimkait became the first Canadian woman to win an Olympic medal in the 57-kg class in judo. Klimkait was named to Team Canada’s bronze medalists.
