Tokyo 2020: China YANG Qian win the first gold medal of the Games

The first medals at Tokyo 2020 have been traditionally awarded by the IOC President.

Yang Qian wins the women’s 10m air rifle with an Olympic Record of 251.8!

YANG Qian of China won the first gold medal of Tokyo 2020 in the women’s 10m air rifle event. Anastasiia Galashina of Russia only scored an 8.9 in the final, her lowest score of the competition, while Yang won the gold medal with a 9.8.

Yang, who was competing in her maiden Olympics, was presented her medal by International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach as the first champion of the 2020 Games.

With no Rio medalists competing in Tokyo 2020, the field for a new Olympic champion in the women’s 10m air rifle was wide open.

Yang kept his nerve with the last shot of 9.8 to finish 0.7 ahead of her competitor.

While Yang and Galashina placed sixth and eighth in the qualification round, Jeanette Hegg Duestad of Norway took the lead by shooting an Olympic qualifying record of 632.9. She came in fourth place, just outside the medals.
