1)Basketball:
As the country’s most popular sport for women, it is no surprise that over 450,000 girls and women compete in organized basketball annually. While strains and sprains may currently be the most common injuries found in basketball today, the number of head injuries involved in the sport is on the rise.
Recently, a study about basketball injuries revealed that the number of TBIs in female basketball players has increased by 70% within the last 10 years. This stat equals out to almost 12,000 injuries in female ballplayers annually which triples the number of TBIs.

2) Cheerleading:
A little known fact is that cheerleading accidents make up 65% of all women’s high school athletics catastrophic injuries. This number becomes increasingly precarious as only 10% of the nation’s 3 million female high school athletes are cheerleaders.
Since the 1980’s the number of cheerleaders to visit the emergency room has tripled. This significant increase is due to stunt performances becoming more dangerous without proper spotting or protection. Cheerleaders are called to perform death-defying stunts in settings with little to no protection like basketball courts and football fields, instead of padded or matted facilities.
3) Horseback Riding:
Though horseback riding seems to be a peaceful sport, it actually involves grave risks. Surprisingly enough, horseback riding is twenty times more dangerous than motorcycling. Equestrians average an accident per every 350 hours of practice, while motorcyclists average an accident per every 7,000 hours of riding.
The most common as well as dangerous horseback riding incidents involve falling off a horse. These accidents have the potential to result in traumatic injuries to the spinal cord and/or head.
4) Soccer:
Concussions account for 11% of women’s soccer injuries according to the NCAA. Thus, it is best to proceed with caution when performing headers as well as penalty kicks.
However, concussions do not only occur when heading the ball, but they are also sustained when a player on player collisions occur in the air or on the ground.
5) Field Hockey:
The current protective gear involved in field hockey like eye and mouth guards is insufficient at preventing injuries. 62% of female field hockey players are at risk daily of sustaining at least three sports-related injuries. This means that field hockey players are most likely to sustain numerous injuries and/or re-injure themselves.
Field hockey is also known for causing chronic injuries like lower back pain; ankle, knee, or hip tendinitis; and lower extremity stress fractures. Not to mention, 90% of the face and head injuries are a direct result of players being struck by a field hockey ball or stick.
Here are some other sports which are meant to be referred to as dangerous sports for women include Soccer, Rugby, Cricket and Hockey
Injury Prevention:
It is important to educate your children at a young age on sports safety tips and gear knowledge. It is vital that our female athletes always wear proper protective equipment, even when practicing. 62% of sports-related injuries are caused during practice, yet only one out of three athletes are properly protected outside of game-day. Do not be another statistic and protect yourself today.
