Football is the most popular sport in Germany and indeed they are one of the superpowers of the sport internationally.
Are you interested in which kind of sports the Germans love most? If so our Top 5 sports in Germany list will help you understand the Germans and their love for certain sports. We will also let you know who are the most famous German sports.
1) Fussball – Soccer or Football
Football is the most popular sport in Germany and indeed they are one of the superpowers of the sport internationally. They have won the FIFA World Cup four times (1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014) and have hosted it twice (1974 and 2006). They have also won the UEFA European Championship three times (1972, 1980 and 1996) and hosted it in 1988.
Some of their best players include Thomas Muller, Miroslav Klose, Jurgen Klinsmann, Gerard Muller, Lothar Matthaus, and Frank Beckenbauer. The German Football Association, with its member’s roster well over 6.3 million, is the largest sports organization in the world.
Even though it is not as popular on TV channels as soccer, golf is one of the most played sports in Germany. The Germans have a natural talent in Golf and people like Martin Kaymer proves this. Such sport is mainly paid by Germans in the higher class as the golf equipment is normally quite expensive. An average golf club can easily cost up to 300 – 400 euros.
Probably Martin Kaymer is the most famous German golf player. He is still playing on the PGA tour and was only the second German golf player to win a Major-tournament. In 2011 he was even the top golf player worldwide.
3) Ice Hockey:
If you are looking for sports combined together with partying, noise and adrenaline rush, then an Ice hockey match is the thing for you. In Germany, this sport is renowned for its unique atmosphere. The German ice hockey team is considered to be one of the best in the world and there are many successful German ice hockey players.
The German icehockey league is considered one of the best leagues worldwide, but of course well behind the more famous American NHL.
When comparing to other basketball teams around the world, the German one is not amongst the top one. This, however, does not make it any less famous. The talents of famous and successful players such as Detlef Schrempf helped making German basketball matches one of the most liked sports in the country.
The German Basketball leaugue though is far from being the top one in Europe, but the atmosphere at one of the games is very emotional and definitely something you should try to check out.
5) Motorsport – especially Formula 1:
Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel. These two fantastic racers were responsible for the big hype there was around Formula 1 back in the days.
Both Schumacher and Vettel were so successful drivers, that for years they dominated the sport and made millions of Germans very proud to watch the races on Sunday afternoons at home.
But now that Schumacher and Vettel are not World champions anymore, the Germans seem to start losing interest in Formula 1. Hopefully this Formula 1 season we will see Vettel on top again.
As far as the Olympic Games are concerned, Germany is one of the powerhouse ranking third when it comes to the all-time medal count in both the Summer and Winter Games as well as hosting quite a few.
