Even after the lofty grades at high school, Gafney was unable to reach his freshman season’s daily rotation with the Buckeyes and as the year went by, his playing time only declined. Gaffney was on the court for at least nine minutes in five of the season’s first seven games but only once the rest of the season cracked six minutes of action.
