England Cricket: Joe Root became the first batsman to score a double century in his 100th Test.

A double hundred from the in-form Joe Root saw England post 578 runs in their first innings at the first Test in Chennai.

In his 100th Test, Joe Root carved out a genius double century and helped England achieve a commanding role on the second day of Saturday’s first Test against India. In his 100th Test match, Root became the first cricketer to make a double century.

Root proceeded to bat in a serene fashion, collecting runs with ease, at his lunch score of 156, and hit his double hundred with a six off Ravichandran Ashwin. The root is the first Englishman with a six to put up a double hundred. He’s the 19th overall batsman to do so and the first since Mayank Agarwal in November 2019 against Bangladesh.

Root has now scored 5 double centuries in Test cricket; only Wally Hammond has posted more for England (7). He is also the second Test captain to register 150+ scores in three successive Tests since Donald Bradman, who achieved the feat in 1937.
