According to an official NZC statement, the 35-year-old will take a casual contract to create opportunities to play in T20 franchise competitions—a trend that began in 2022, when fast bowler Trent Boult became the first prominent athlete to do so. Bracewell, who has captained New Zealand on 13 occasions, is among an expanding cohort of active players making the same move, including Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, Tim Seifert, and Finn Allen.

Preceding captain Kane Williamson similarly declined a central contract for the 2024-25 campaign, in advance of his international retirement during the current year. Bracewell acknowledged that New Zealand Cricket had endorsed his decision. “The support extended by New Zealand Cricket for me to pursue this opportunity at this juncture in my career is deeply meaningful,” stated Bracewell, who has been selected in the 16-member squad for the forthcoming home T20 series against India.
New Zealand coach Rob Walter, who previously coached Kelly for two seasons at Otago, affirmed that the promotion was warranted. “Nick has demonstrated exceptional performance in domestic cricket throughout multiple seasons, and his achievement in securing this inaugural contract at this stage of his career reflects his dedication and commitment,” he remarked. “Introducing athletes such as Nick to international cricket at a later developmental stage certainly presents distinct advantages regarding player self-awareness and their capacity to maintain confidence while performing in high-pressure situations.”
