Auckland has been judged as the best medium-sized city in the world for sporting events.
New Zealand’s largest city took out the category at the biennial SportBusiness Ultimate Sports Cities Awards. Overall it ranked as the fourth-best sports city, behind only New York, London, and Melbourne.
It is the second time on the trot that Auckland has won the medium category – 1.3 million to 3 million population – have also picked up the honor at the 2014 awards. Hosting major events showcases Auckland to the world, giving people a reason to visit, to stay longer, and to experience more of what we have to offer.
“It brings benefits that extend beyond the duration of the events themselves, boosting our sporting organizations, local businesses, and regional amenities.”
Next year should also be a bumper year, with Auckland hosting the World Masters Games as well as fixtures on the British and Irish Lions rugby tour which are expected to bring in tens of thousands of visitors to the city.
The stunning city of Auckland is a deserved winner of all of the awards it has received in the 2016 edition of SportBusiness Ultimate Sports Cities – Best Medium Sports City, Best Events Strategy, and Best Security.

In 2014, the last time the awards were held, Auckland was named the third-best sporting city in the world, ranking after London and Melbourne.
