Steven Gerrard has hailed Liverpool star Mohamed Salah as the best player on the planet after another devastating performance against Roma in the Champions League.
The Egyptian struck twice in the first half of Liverpool’s thumping 5-2 victory over Roma, first breaking the deadlock with a stunning effort that kissed the bar on the way in before dinking goalkeeper Alisson just before the break.
He scored two brilliant goals in the first half against his former club to set Jurgen Klopp’s side on their way to victory in the semi-final first leg at Anfield. He set up two more in the second half to cap a thrilling evening.
Mo Salah’s brace means he has now scored more goals than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this season across all competitions. The former Roma man has netted a staggering 43 times this season – one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and three more than Lionel Messi – and Gerard believes Salah is now playing at a level above the legendary duo.

The Spain-based duo have had a stranglehold on the prestigious Ballon d’Or award since 2008, each winning the trophy for the world’s best player five times. But Salah’s decisive performances are threatening to break that hegemony.

The former Liverpool skipper told BT Sport: ‘He’s in the form of his life. ‘It’s difficult to compare him to your Ronaldo’s and Messi’s because they’ve done it for so long and they’ve been consistent year in, year out. ‘But, without a shadow of a doubt, he’s the best player on the planet right now.’
Salah’s double against Roma also takes his Champions League tally this season to nine goals, making him the most prolific Premier League player in Europe since Ruud van Nistelrooy.
He was named PFA Player of the Year on Sunday just a day after equalling the record for most goals in a single Premier League campaign in a 38-game season, and can break it on Saturday against Stoke.
