Commownealth Games 2018: Sanjita Chanu wins second gold medal for India in Gold Coast, Twitter Reacts on her Achievement

Sanjita Chanu lifted a total weight of 192 kg, 86 kg in Snatch and 108 kg in Clean-and-Jerk, to clinch the gold medal for India at Gold Coast.

Sanjita Chanu struck her second consecutive gold medal on the 2nd day of the CWG 2018 at Gold Coast. The Manipuri athlete created a CWG record in Snatch, lifting a total of 84 kg, and then lifted 108 kg on her way to get to a total lift of 192 kg.

Sanjita Chanu won the second gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2018, a day after Mirabai Chanu won the gold. She became the third weightlifter for the country to win a medal at Gold Coast.

The 24-year old weightlifter created Games record in Snatch category, lifting 84 kg, and then went on to lift 108 kg in clean-and-jerk on her way to earn the top podium finish. The Manipur athlete attempted to create a CWG record in clean-and-jerk by trying to lift 112 kg but failed to do so at the last moment. She lifted a total of 192 kg to register her win.

Chanu’s gold medal win drew applause from all corners with Union Minister of Sports Rajyavardhan Rathore and former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag congratulating the athlete on her glorious victory. Apart from them, commentator Harsha Bhogle and Sports Authority of India also congratulated the athlete.

Sachin Tendulkar also heaped praise on Chanu and said, “Golden start to the day!! Continuing from where she left off 4 years ago in Glasgow. Congratulations, Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu on giving 🇮🇳 it’s 2nd Gold Medal 🥇 in the on-going #GC2018. Proud moment.”

It is Chanu’s second consecutive gold medal win in Commonwealth Games. She won the gold in women’s 48 kg event at Glasgow in 2014.
