
Canada beats the US in revenge hockey as it happened.
U.S. hockey fans booed the Canadian national anthem, the lyrics of which singer Chantal Kreviazuk acknowledged to CBC News she changed from “True patriot love, in all of us command” to “that only us command” in reaction to President Trump’s request for Canada’s annexation as the 51st U.S. state.

Bill Guerin, general manager of Team USA, invited Trump to attend the game in Boston. The US president was unable to attend but made a point of calling the squad to wish them luck.
Both countries have some of the NHL’s brightest stars, including Canadians Mitch Marner and Connor McDavid and Americans Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel. The game provided an opportunity for this new generation of players to show themselves.
However, in Canada, the game was also personal, allowing both die-hard and casual supporters to wallow in national pride at a time when the country’s sovereignty appears to be threatened by its closest neighbour.
The first game of this tournament between Canada and the United States played on February 15 in Montreal, saw Canadian fans boo the American national anthem, despite the announcer imploring fans ahead of time – in both English and French – to respect the opposing team.
