Hardik Pandya vs Suryakumar Yadav as India T20I captain.
The best person to take Rohit Sharma’s place as captain would be Hardik, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup as vice captain. Given his history of injuries, the selectors might, nevertheless, make a different decision. In order to keep him healthy for the Champions Trophy in February of the following year, the board will be forced to control his exertion in the white-ball format.
Who might be the next choice for India? Suryakumar Yadav, who led India in eight Twenty20 Internationals against Australia and South Africa last year, has emerged as an unexpected front-runner for the position if claims from the media are to be believed. Gambhir and Agarkar both spoke with Hardik about the shift in strategy, with the management scheduled to select a T20I captain, according to a PTI report on Tuesday.

The national selectors had decided to name Pandya the captain in the shorter format following India’s 2022 T20 World Cup defeat under Rohit, but they were forced to change their minds due to the all-rounder’s numerous mishaps. Thus, they supported Rohit’s decision to captain India again for the T20 World Cup when the selection committee was taken over by former bowler Ajit Agarkar. While Pandya was still healing and Rohit was rested during India’s ODI World Cup campaign, Suryakumar captained the national T20 team with success.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that Pandya has informed the BCCI that he won’t be part of the ODI squad for the Lanka tour, citing personal reasons. The Indian team will play three ODIs with Lanka from August 2 to 7. Those in the know also inform that Gambhir has urged all senior players Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah to play three ODIs against Sri Lanka as the Indian team will be getting one more long break thereafter. The players are yet to revert with Rohit and Kohli taking a break and traveling abroad with their families.
How Gambhir gels with India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit, as well as other senior players like Kohi, would be interesting to see.
