ODI World Cup performers and uncapped Indians were in big demand at the IPL 2024 auction.

Mitchell Starc, an Australian fast bowler, broke the record for the most expensive player at an IPL auction when he was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 24.75 crore, or around US$2,982,000. At the IPL 2024 auction in Dubai, he beat Sunrisers Hyderabad’s winning price of INR 20.50 crore (about US$2,470,000) for Australia’s skipper Pat Cummins, who won the ODI World Cup. The bid was placed less than two hours earlier.

When Starc went up for bid in the first fast bowlers’ set of the day, the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals engaged in a battle for him. But the Gujarat Titans and KKR, the only teams with more than INR 30 crore in their coffers at the time, quickly took control of it.

Travis Head, Cummins’ countryman and the player of the match in the 2023 World Cup final, was also acquired by SRH for 6.80 crore. Wanindu Hasaranga, an all-rounder from Sri Lanka, was sensationally acquired by the team for his basic fee of 1.50 crore.

Harshal Patel joined the Punjab Kings on Wednesday for a reported 11.75 crore rupees, marking the largest bid ever made for an Indian athlete.

Rachin Ravindra was the first player the Chennai Super Kings acquired for 1.80 crore rupees. Loud applause greeted Shardul Thakur’s return to Chepauk as well.
