Explained: Why Angelo Mathews was dismissed before facing a ball

In a first in international cricket, Angelo Mathews was timed out during Sri Lanka’s match against Bangladesh on Monday in Delhi. At the loss of Sadeera Samarawickrama’s wicket, Mathews went in to bat at No.6, but had to walk back before facing a single ball after being timed out – a first in international cricket across all formats.

The incident occurred in the 25th over of Sri Lanka’s innings, when Shakib Al Hasan had just dismissed Samarawickrama, who was caught close to the rope by Mahmudullah.

Mathews walked in slowly, then battled with his helmet when the strap broke just as he was about to take guard.

Shakib and the Bangladesh side requested for a “timed out” dismissal as he signaled to the dressing room for a new helmet, and the umpires upheld the plea, much to Mathews’ chagrin.

Mathews was seen deep in conversation with Bangladesh and the umpires, but the appeal was not dropped, and Mathews was forced to return disappointed.
