India reduced the deficit by 162 runs in their first innings, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul batting on 9 runs each at the conclusion of play. Earlier in the day, after reaching tea at 138 for four, England lost their final six wickets for 45 runs in the third and final session of the day.
