After bowling England for 183 on the first day of the first Test in Nottingham, India were 21 for no loss at stumps. India reduced the deficit by 162 runs in their first innings, with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul batting on 9 runs each at the conclusion of play. Earlier in the day, after reaching tea at 138 for four, England lost their final six wickets for 45 runs in the third and final session of the day.

Even while the others struggled badly to stand up to the Indian speed bowling assault, skipper Joe Root scored 64 off 108 balls. Jasprit Bumrah took four wickets for 46 runs, Mohammed Shami on 3/28, and Shardul Thakur on 2/41 for the visitors. After scoring 61 in the first session, England scored 77 runs in 25.2 overs for the loss of two wickets in the afternoon session.
