Canada’s most decorated Summer Games athlete qualifies 6th for the semifinals

Penny Oleksiak of Canada earned bronze in the women’s 200-meter freestyle swim on Wednesday, her second medal of the Tokyo Olympics, and sixth overall.

Oleksiak now holds the record for most medals won by a Canadian athlete at the Summer Games. On Wednesday, the 21-year-old finished second in her heat in 52.95 seconds, behind Australia’s Cate Campbell (52.80), and sixth overall among 16 qualifiers for the semifinals on Thursday in Tokyo (Wednesday in Canada, at 9:53 p.m. ET).

Her six medals also tie the 21-year-old with Cindy Klassen, a speed skater, and Clara Hughes, a cyclist, and speed skater, as the most decorated Canadian competitors in any Olympics.

Oleksiak finished in 1:54.70, a fraction of a second behind gold medalist Ariarne Titmus of Australia, who set a new Olympic record. Siobhan Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong won the silver.

Oleksiak’s victory came after she finished second in the women’s 100-meter freestyle relay with three other teammates on Sunday.

It’s also the third gold medal for Canada’s women’s swimming team, which also won gold in the 100-meter butterfly and silver in the 100-meter backstroke.
