Euro 2020: Paul Pogba removes Heineken beer bottle after Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coca-Cola

Paul Pogba mirrored Cristiano Ronaldo’s Coca-Cola snub by removing a Heineken bottle during a press conference.

At the press conference during the Euro 2020 play against Germany, French midfielder Paul Pogba took the Heineken beer bottle from in front of him.

On the game, the Euro 2020 tournament is providing amazing football action, but there have been a few off-field events that have grabbed headlines as well. During Cristiano Ronaldo’s gesture of removing Coca-Cola bottles during the pre-match news conference before the Hungary encounter, Paul Pogba made a similar gesture following the Germany encounter.

Pogba saw a Heineken beer bottle on the table in front of him at the news conference after France defeated Germany 1-0 in their opening Euro 2020 encounter on Tuesday. He took the bottle and slid it underneath the table. There were also a couple of Coca-Cola bottles on the table, but Pogba, unlike Ronaldo, had no issues with the carbonated soft beverages.

Pogba, a faithful Muslim, abstains from drinking and even endorses alcoholic beverages. He is the second person to make such a gesture toward a tournament sponsor. While Pogba’s removal of the Heineken bottle was motivated by religious beliefs, Ronaldo’s removal of the Coca-Cola bottle was motivated by health concerns.

Pogba and Ronaldo are two of the world’s most famous footballers. Coca-brand Cola’s value allegedly dropped by USD 4 billion when Ronaldo ignored them at the news conference. The stock prices of Coca-Cola and Heineken both fell sharply after Ronaldo’s gesture, and the same might happen with Heineken.

Coca-Cola’s share price dropped from $56.10 to $55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, a 1.6% dip. The market value of Coca-Cola went from $242bn to $238bn – a drop of $4bn.

Despite the fact that Ronaldo’s fame and global reach are far greater than Pogba’s, the Frenchman is also a very popular player. Pogba is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, and he represents Manchester United, one of Europe’s most popular and successful clubs.
