Yuvraj Singh has scored his first century in ODI cricket since India’s unforgettable run to the World Cup title in 2011, in his 295th game and second since being recalled to the team for the ongoing series with England.
The landmark came on Thursday at Cuttack’s Barabati Stadium, with Yuvraj stroking his way to a superb hundred in the company of old partner MS Dhoni, with whom he has scored close to 3000 runs in ODIs while forging a very successful middle-order pairing.
The 35-year-old last scored an ODI century during the World Cup nearly six years ago, on March 20, 2011 against West Indies in Chennai. Between that innings and the start of today’s game, Yuvraj scored 371 runs in 20 innings at an average of 21.82 with three fifties and a best of 61 versus England in January 2013. He was dropped for the tour of New Zealand in January 2014 after a lean run in which his timing against fast bowling had been a notable feature of his struggles.
In his second innings on comeback – he made 15 from 12 balls on Sunday in Pune – Yuvraj led the way in reviving India’s innings from the loss of three wickets inside the first five overs of the second ODI. He walked to crease in the fifth over after Chris Woakes bowled Shikhar Dhawan as his third wicket, and set about with a fluid recovery act.
He hit his ninth ball faced for four, a trademark whip off the hips that flew over square leg, and three deliveries later pulled out the short-arm pull for another boundary. That Jake Ball over ended with a third four, as Yuvraj flicked with elegance and placement.
This brand of boundary-hitting – easy on the eye and powerful – had been the hallmark of Yuvraj’s batting in years past especially when he was a vital cog in the middle order.
It all came back today, as the left-hander tucked into England’s bowling and dominated the partnership with Dhoni. Of his first 27 runs, 24 came in six boundaries. He got to his first fifty in 1149 days (he made 55 versus West Indies on November 27, 2013) in 56 deliveries, and then cracked his first six, an effortless drive over long-off off Ben Stokes.
FIFTY! Yuvraj Singh gets to his 52nd half-century off 56 balls. Played Yuvi! This is his first half-century since November 2013 agianst West Indies. Brilliant batting today.
YUVRAJ SINGH SCORES HIS 14th ODI CENTURY. What a player he has been for India. The man who won the two World Cups has scored a century after six years. And doesn’t he like it. Thanks the skies for this. Both arms up in the air. Emotional moment for him. Fourth against England.
Yuvraj Singh smashes two consecutive fours to end the 38th over and India are 237 for the loss of three wickets. Woakes to bowl again and MS Dhoni is on strike.
Yuvraj Singh is now the highest run scorer for India in ODIs against England. Goes past Sachin Tendulkar, who had scored 1455 runs. Yuvraj Singh has 1461*
Review!Yuvraj Singh has been given out by the on-field umpire but he has reviewed it. The ball is full and is has taken the upper part of Yuvraj Singh’s bat. But it has also bounced after hitting the bat.
The last time he scored a century was in the 2011 World Cup, a tournament that India won largely due to Yuvraj’s efforts with the bat and ball. Since then, he fought a victorious battle with cancer and made his comeback into the Indian team with a 35-ball-77 in a T20I against Australia. But he was dropped due to inconsistent form.
This is also his first ODI series for India in two years. Yuvraj did get off to a good start in the first ODI played against England at Pune but was dismissed for a small total. That match, though is remembered more for the heroics of Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav.
