Cristiano Ronaldo, who will now miss Wednesday’s return leg, scored a sensational goal but was booked and later sent off for a his celebration and for diving as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 in Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday.
Cristiano Ronaldo made a big impact in his truncated appearance at Camp Nou on Sunday, scoring a goal before being sent off in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Ronaldo went on in the 58th minute and scored with a beautiful strike to make it 2-1 in the 80th, earning a yellow card for taking off his shirt to flex his muscles at Barcelona’s faithful.
Two other goals (one an own goal by Gerrard Pique) for Real Madrid hurt Barcelona. The final nail in the coffin was Marco Asensio’s goal in the 90th minute. Lionel Messi scored in the 77th minute for Barcelona.
The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup will be played at the Wednesday’s second leg at the Bernabeu. Here are the video highlights from the match.
While Ronaldo’s goal was a blow, substitute Marco Asensio’s 90th-minute strike _ with Madrid down to 10 men _ left Barcelona in a deep hole for the second leg.
“I am not going to play this down, we are happy with the result. But of course it is not over,” Zidane said. “We are going to enjoy this today, because it is something to enjoy, and tomorrow we will think about the game on Wednesday.”
While Zidane’s Madrid took a big step to a second title to start the season after beating Manchester United in the European Super Cup, it was a dismal debut for Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde.

2nd goal: Lionel Messi was given a chance through a penalty after Real Madrid goalkeeper was booked for a foul on Luis Suarez inside the area in the 77th minute
3rd goal: Real Madrid once again took the lead in the 80th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo, coming off the bench in the 50th minute, scored from outside the box against Barcelona
4th goal: Marco Anselo sealed the game for Real Madrid with a brilliant strike in the 90th minute to make the score 3-1 against Barcelona and win the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup.
Ronaldo booked: After scoring a wonderful goal in the 78th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo was booked two minutes later. He had been booked for his celebrations after the goal and this time for a dive inside the box. Two yellows meant he was out for the rest of the game
The second leg of the Spanish Super Cup will be held on Wednesday.
