Today north east united host defending champions Chennaiyin FC in an intriguing Hero Indian Super League clash at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. NorthEast United have led the ISL table since their opening day win over Kerala Blasters FC. They now have 10 points from five matches, and a win against the defending champions will open a clear five-point gap at the top of the table.
NorthEast United managed a fighting 1-1 draw against Delhi Dynamos in the previous match and, according to Vingada, the team can now match the best teams in the league.
Chennaiyin FC will have pleasant memories about last season when they won the title but they will hope to forget their visit to Guwahati in a hurry. It all ended in disaster for Marco Materazzi’s side last season when Harmanjyot Khabra was sent off, players were involved in skirmishes and they lost 0-2.
Even in the first year, NorthEast stunned Chennaiyin FC, then leading the table, with a flurry of goals in the first session. Materazzi will hope to change his away record in Guwahati and having won against FC Goa, will not be short on confidence.
“We came in with a whole new mentality and what I told my players is that if we put the heart in, the will, the hunger, then we can win. If not then we are not the same team and we can be at the bottom of the table,” said Materazzi.
Chennaiyin FC are placed sixth at the moment with four points from three matches.
What a save by Subrata Paul, Riise almost rolled back the years with a fantastic free kick which took a deflection and appeared to be heading to the top corner, but is parried away by the Arjuna Award winner.
First corner of the game goes to NorthEast. Zokora took it and it was not the best of corners. And was easily seen off. Riise is back to playing at centre half after his rather unimpressive game as a full back in Chennaiyin’s match against Mumbai City FC. Alfaro had the best chance of the half when he ran into the box and took the shot, which was saved by Karanjeet.
GOAL: Chennaiyin FC 1-0 NorthEast united (Dudu 33′)
Wadoo sends in a pin-point cross from the right, and Dudu makes a clever run past Zokora in the box, to send the ball into the net with a thumping header at the near post. He made no mistake as he headed it into the corner. Chennaiyin FC 1-0 NorthEast United FC.
GOAL: Chennaiyin FC 1-1 NorthEast United (Velez 38′)
Velez ran into the box, dribling past a defendor to find space in the box. It was all about the placement of the shot after that point and the Argentine made sure it was perfect. he drives into space and shoots into the side netting with Karanjit rooted to the spot. Real bad defending by Riise though.
GOAL:Chennaiyin FC 2-1 NorthEast United (Dudu 45′)
A lovely cross from the left by Jerry, Dudu with a great finish inside of his feet into the roof of the net, to send Chennaiyin FC ahead. Dudu again prove himself.
Half Time: Chennaiyin FC 2-1 NorthEast United
It has been quite a first half. That was the most entertaining of halves I have seen in the ISL so far this season, it was an end to end game which is very commendable given the heat in Chennai. It is still anybody’s game with the way Chennai’s defence is performing.
GOAL: Chennaiyin FC 2-2 NorthEast United (Velez 51′)
Good build up play by NorthEast United on the right, the cross from the right is chested to Velez who hits the volley first time, it goes through the legs of Sabia, and hits the hand of Karanjit and goes in. Although he got to the ball, it bounced into goal.
Chennaiyin are controlling more of the possession but NorthEast are sitting back and defending. Chennaiyin need to be careful as NorthEast have some quick players who have the pace to hit them on the counter. Katsumi Yusa comes on for Alfaro whoch comes as a surprise as NorthEast are gunning for a goal.
Bernard Mendy comes in front for Hans Mulder and he looks to have decided to play as an attacker. Subrata Paul has gone down and is asking for a substitution. Wonder if the injury is real or just a time wasting tactic. The crowd cheered as if a goal had gone in when Mendy came on.
GOAL: Chennaiyin FC 3-2 NorthEast United (Dudu 80′)
Mendy made a run down the right, and passed the ball to Dudu who ran into the middle. Dudu made a dive for it, it hit the defendor, but seemed to come of his leg. the goalkeeper had committed and was completely off his line when the ball rolled into the net.
And now its all come to the boil. It all started with Velez throwing the ball at Wadoo. Ity led to a mix up in which Romaric had his hands on a quite few players’ faces while Hanghal also got involved. In the end its a yellow for Velez, Romaric and the latter is very lucky that he hasn’t been sent off.
GOAL: Chennaiyn FC 3-3 NorthEast United (Shouvik 95′)
What a game in 98 min when Nico Velez swings in a corner, Mendy loses Shouvik in the box to see him power his header home to send the handful away fans in the stadium into delirium. Chennaiyin just can’t hold on to the lead this season. Another twist in the tale.
Chennai fc (3-3) North east united fc
60% ball possession 40%
13 shots 11
10 fouls 7
5 corners 3
Its another heartbreak for Chennaiyin. You have to feel for them as this was one of those rare matches this season when they were gunnning for goal instead of preventing conceding one. A late goal in every sense of the word is has undone them. With this draw, their chances of making the semi finals becomes only slimmer. Chennai fc secured 7 position with 15 points whereas North east united fc at 5 position with 15 points in the ISL points table.
